Ever find yourself in a situation where you are unsure what action to take? If so, empower yourself and try the 'Change, accept or walk away' process.
One of my clients recently shared with me an issue she was having with a particular colleague at work. She found this particular person to be very negative, bad tempered and was spreading gossip around the office. This had been going on for several months and my client was starting to resent this individual and avoid her has much as possible. As a result of this, we used the ' Change, Accept or Walk away' process so that my client felt more empowered.
We first looked at CHANGE
I asked my client a simple question - Was it possible to CHANGE the situation? What options were available for change?
We both agreed that we couldn't change this individuals behavior but we could empower ourselves to make some changes in order to feel better about the situation. Options included:
We then looked at ACCEPT
Was it possible to accept the situation? What options were available to acceptance?
We agreed that another option would be just to accept that this person would never change so there was no point wishing things would be different. The accept options would include choosing not to engage with them or get involved in anyway. . The key for the acceptance option was not to . allow this persons behavior to upset us and accept them for who they are! ( easier said than done sometimes!)
Finally, we looked at WALK AWAY?
Was this situation so bad that my client needed to walk away? Did she need to start looking for alternative employment?
My client decided that apart from dealing with this individual, she really enjoyed her job so walking away was not really an option.
One of the beneficial things about this process is that it can force us to take responsibility, take back our power from people and situations that don't feel good and get out of blame and resentment. . Try it the next time you need to resolve an issue!
