When running workshops or speaking at organisations, I often hear that Senior Management have set goals or have expectations for their staff relating to performance. However, for the employees, if they have little interest in achieving these goals or cannot see 'what it is it for them' then it simply will continue to just be a dream or a goal in managements mind!
The positive feelings of hope, belief, certainty and expectation are fundamental to the achievement of any goal, whether it is personal or organisational. When you are able to feel the expectation of your desire becoming your reality then you have successfully closed the gap on receiving what you want. However, the key is 'receiving what you want' and how many employees want to experience or receive a goal that has been set for them? For example, let's say you have a goal to increase staff engagement to 75%. You put a plan in place and start to work on making it happen. Unfortunately, unless you also work on your employees underlying beliefs that it can or will happen and it will be a positive experience then it is not likely that you will achieve that 75% target very soon! The key is to 'close the gap' on the goal and reason why your staff would want to expect or believe it. Lisa Phillips is an International Speaker and Confidence Coach based in Sydney.
